An explanation of key abbreviations

The Pennington family is included within these records, a note from the editor.
The Pennington records. The IGI and Ancestry.com have multiple records of this family and many are contradictory. Here is a paper I’ve found which might correct the errors –

In the will of William Penington, he states:
give and bequeath amongst the children of Johanne Woodcock my other wives sister ten pounds of lawful money of England part and part like equally amongst them at their several days of marriage or as they shall severally attain their lawful ages of one and twenty years that is to say at which of those times shall next and soonest happen and one to be another’s heir…

From this it has been mistakenly presumed that William’s wife Alice was born a Woodcock. Whoever originally made this presumption overlooked the words “my other wives sister”. In fact, Alice was William’s second wife, maiden name unknown.

William’s first wife was Elizabeth Etheridge, daughter of Robert Etheridge, citizen & courier of London, who left a will in 1566, referring to his daughter Elizabeth Pennyngton. Elizabeth’s sister was Johanne who married William Woodcock on 4th Nov 1565 at St. Mary At Hill. Elizabeth, wife of William Penington died about 1573.

William married secondly widow Alice Shetterden (nee?) in 1574. Alice was the widow of Isaac Shetterden who died in 1574. She was not the sister of Johanne Woodcock. William’s son Robert Penington married his step-sister Judith Shetterden (daughter of Isaac and Alice Shetterden) in 1581.
