behoof benefit or advantage
bequeath to leave or give personal property or money by will, to hand down or pass on after your death
copyhold copyhold tenure was as form of feudal tenure of common land in England from the Middle Ages until the 19th century although surviving in a residual form until 1922. The land was held according to the custom of the manor and the mode of landholding took its name from the fact that the 'title deed' received by the tenant was a copy of the relevant entry in the manorial court roll.
devise a gift or disposal of real property
messuage a dwelling house with outbuildings and land assigned to its use
moiety the half of anything; as, if a testator bequeath one moiety of his estate to A, and the other to B, each shall take an equal part. Joint tenants are said to hold by moieties
nuncupative will a 'deathbed' will that must be made in the presence of two witnesses who usually write the document.
ordain to set something that will continue in a certain order
pightle a small field, paddock or enclosure

First I give and devise unto my three sons Thomas Day of Haydon in Essex, farmer; James Day of Henham yeoman and John Day of Chrishall farmer All and every my household messuages, cottages or tenements, lands and hereditaments whatsoever ,,,,,To hold to them and their heirs Upon trust...And I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah the wife of James Day the sum of fifty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain I likewise give and bequeath unto her my said daughter the debt or sum of three hundred pounds due and owing to me from her son in law Thomas Nottage of Henham, farmer and also the debt or sum of one hundred pounds due and owing to me from her son Thomas Day together with all interest that may be due to me. Item I give and bequeath to my said daughter Emma the sum of two hundred pounds and I direct that the said two last mentioned legacies shall be paid within twelve calendar months next after my decease. I direct my executors hereinafter named as soon as they conveniently can after my decease to relinquish and give up the farm and lands which I may occupy And as to all my household goods and furniture, linen, books and other household effects not hereinbefore specifically bequeathed and also my implements of husbandry, crops of corn and grain, live and dead stock and all other my personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my said executors their executors and administrators Upon Trust as soon as conveniently may be after my decease to sell dispose of and convert the same into money...And upon further trust to pay and divide the surplus of the same money unto and equally between all my before mentioned children who shall be living at the time of my decease and the issue of any deceased child or children share and share alike... And I nominate constitute and appoint my said son Thomas and my friend John Mumford of Pledgden Hall in the parish of Henham aforesaid, farmer, executors of this my Will...Dated 19th September 1842.

This Will is revoked on the 12th April 1845 when a codicil then gave all her copyhold cottages, appurtenances and gardens belonging, situate at or adjoining Wood End Green to her daughter Emma. Charles is to receive one hundred and forty pounds. Emma and Charles (the youngest son) are to share the residual estate. Thomas and John Mumford were appointed executors. Witnessed: Susan Lyles spinster and Mary Prior, widow. Dated 12th April 1845. At her death her goods, chattels and credits were valued at being under £450.

As to what little I have of this worlds goods, I leave it to be equally divided between my two daughters Sarah Sainsbury and Elizabeth Stacey. Rev. Hopkins and Revd. Melvil are asked to 'take care of my funeral'. Will dated June 24th 1736 and witnessed by Mr Melvil, Mr Hopkins, John Newland and John Dixon.
