The building was originally HENHAM village school opened in 1876 and closed in July 1975. The building was subsequently converted and used for a variety of community activities. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the conversion process, its impact locally and the benefits to local heritage and culture. Includes colour photographs and plan.

1. This Indenture was made the fifth day of April in the forty second year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two between Richard Leach of Henham in the County of Essex, gentleman and Susanna his wife (late Susanna Foster, widow) of the one part and Thomas Nottage of Henham aforesaid, shopkeeper, of the other part. By a Surrender dated the twenty seventh day of August one thousand seven hundred and ninety four Susanna, alias Susanna Foster, widow, a customary tenant of the manor of Henham Hall in the said County of Essex. By the Surrender, Richard Leach and Susanna his wife contracted with the Thomas Nottage for the absolute sale and conveyance to him and his heirs of the customary or copyhold lands, hereditaments and premises. This comprised one acre of land lying upon Bury Hill in a Common field called Platts field and all that one acre and a half of land lying in Platts field aforesaid abutting upon a lane called Platts Lane on the east part holden of the said .manor by Copy of Court Roll and all ways, rights, commons, members and appurtenances whatsoever to the same premises belonging) for seventy pounds. Court held for the Manor of Henham Hall on the 30th April 1810 under the Surrender of James Ginn Searle and the customary messuage or tenement with the barns, stables, outhouses, buildings, yards, gardens, orchards and appurtenances thereunto belonging and four pieces or parcels of customary arable and pasture land belonging and adjoining called 'Parkcrofts' containing by estimation eight acres more or less formerly in the occupation of .. Collins, widow or her assigns situate, living and being in Henham and abutting upon Wood End Green upon the south part and being between Henham Park on the east and lands formerly of James William Clark on the north and west parts and also all that piece of customary land being in a common field called Platts Field within the parish of Henham .. containing by estimation three acres more or less next lands sometime of Thatcher Woollen on the east part and a footway leading from the town of Henham to Henham windmill on the west part one head thereof abutting upon land formerly of George Browne on the north part, and also one parcel of land called 'Longcroft' containing by estimation two acres and a half more or less, one piece of land adjoining in Platts field next or near 'Longcroft' hedge containing by estimation two acres and a half more or less, one piece of land called the Seven Rood piece being upon Bury Hill in a field called Platts field containing by estimation seven roods more or less, one piece of land being in Platts field called the Hill piece containing by estimation two acres and a half more or less, one piece of land being in the same field called Platts field at Hayes Corner containing one acre and a half as the said messuage or tenement lands and premises are situate lying and being in the parish of Henham aforesaid and were formerly in the tenure or occupation of James Bacon, his undertenants or assigns and to all which last described hereditaments and premises (amongst others) the said Thomas Nottage was admitted to him and his heirs at a Court held for the said Manor on the third day of April one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven under the surrender of Samuel Strode and also all that one acre of land being upon Bury Hill in a common field called Platts field and all that one acre and a half of land being in Platts field aforesaid abutting upon a lane called Platts Lane on the east part holden of the said Manor by copy of Court Roll (to which said last described two pieces or parcels of land the said Thomas Nottage was admitted to him and his heirs at a Court held for the said manor on the twelfth of May one thousand eight hundred and two under the Surrender of a Richard Leach and Susanna his wife and also all that customary or copyhold .. or .. piece or parcel of land formerly pasture and now arable with the appurtenances in Henham aforesaid containing by estimation one acre and a half more or less next the freehold orchard formerly of John Newland towards the north formerly in the occupation of Nathan Nottage and also all the usual and accustomed wants and passages in, by and over the orchard late of the said John Newland to and from the said close of land (to which said late described hereditaments the said Thomas Nottage was admitted tenant to him and his heirs at a Court held for the said Manor on the twenty-sixth day of April one thousand seven hundred and ninety three as the only son and heir of the said Nathan Nottage his father deceased and also all that piece or parcel of customary or copyhold arable land being in the said Common field called Platts field upon Bury Hill in Henham aforesaid containing by estimation four acres more or less with the rights, commons and appurtenances thereto belonging to which said last described piece or parcel of land the said Thomas Nottage was admitted to him and his heirs at a Court held for the said Manor on the first day of July one thousand eight hundred and sixteen under the Surrender of Hester Canning, George Welsh and James Gavine (?) and also all and every other the customary or copyhold messuages or tenements, lands and hereditaments and premises late of the said Thomas Nottage deceased held of the said Manor by copy of Court Roll with their appurtenances save and except a cot intended to be hereby bargained and sold or ... all that messuage or tenement with the yard, orchard and garden in Henham aforesaid with their and every of their appurtenances abutting on Wood End Green aforesaid now or late in the occupation of ... Cracknell and ... Fuller (?) and comprised in the purchase by the said Thomas Nottage deceased from the said James Ginn Searle and also save and except all that customary or copyhold messuage or tenement with the barn since converted into a tenement with the yard and garden thereto belonging situate near Wood End Green aforesaid now or late in the occupation of George Gu.. , Thomas Richard and .. Richard and formerly the estate of the said Nathan Nottage as the said messuage or tenement, barns, stables, .. and buildings, toft lands and hereditaments hereinbefore mentioned and intended to be hereby bargained and sold are situate, lying and being in Henham aforesaid and were late in the tenure or occupation of the said Thomas Nottage deceased except certain lands which were intended to be exchanged by the said Thomas Nottage with William Canning and which said last mentioned lands now are or late were in the tenure of the said William Canning his undertenants or assigns .. as the said messuage or tenement and buildings, toft lands and hereditaments late in the occupation of the said Thomas Nottage deceased now are in the tenure or occupation of Thomas Nottage his son, his undertenants or assigns or however otherwise the said messuage or tenement, barns, stables, yards and buildings, lands and hereditaments are named, .. or described abutted or bounded tenanted or occupied together with all houses, outhouses, .. , barns, stables, buildings, ways, paths, passages, trees, woods, underwood, hedges, ditches, fences, waters, watercourses, .., rights of .., privileges and appurtenances whatsoever to the said hereditaments and premises or any part or parcel thereof belonging or in anyways appertaining or now or at anytime hereforeto accepted, reputed, deemed or taken as part parcel or member thereof or of any part thereof and the Reversion and Reversions, Remainder and Remainders yearly and other rents, ... and profits thereof and all the estate .... use trust possession gain and demand whatsoever both at law and in .. of him the said James Pavitt the said messuage or tenement ... unto the said Joseph Perry .....of James Ginn Searle ....

Cracknell and Fuller (?) and comprised in the purchase by the said Thomas Nottage deceased from the said James Ginn Searle and also save and except all that customary or copyhold messuage or tenement with the barn since converted into a tenement with the yard and garden thereto belonging situate near Wood End Green aforesaid now or late in the occupation of George Guwen, Thomas Richard and .. Richard and formerly the estate of the said Nathan Nottage as the said messuage or tenement, barns, stables, .. and buildings, toft lands and hereditaments hereinbefore mentioned and intended to be hereby bargained and sold are situate, lying and being in Henham aforesaid and were late in the tenure or occupation of the said Thomas Nottage deceased except certain lands which were intended to be exchanged by the said Thomas Nottage with William Canning and which said last mentioned lands now are or late were in the tenure of the said William Canning, his undertenants or assigns .. as the said messuage or tenements and buildings, toft lands and hereditaments late in the occupation of the said Thomas Nottage deceased now are in the tenure or occupation of Thomas Nottage his son, his undertenants or assigns or whosoever otherwise the said messuage or tenement, barns, stables, yards and buildings, lands and hereditaments are called, known or described abutted or bounded, tenanted or occupied together with all houses, outhouses, edifices, barns, stables, buildings, ways, paths, passages, trees, woods, underwood, hedges, ditches, courses, waters, watercourses, commons, rights of commons, privileges and appurtenances whatsoever to the said hereditaments and premises or any part or parcel thereof belonging or in anyways appertaining or now or at anytime heretofore accepted, reputed, deemed or taken as part parcel or member thereof or of any part thereof dub the Reversion and Reversions, Remainder and Remainders yearly and other rents, issues and profits thereof and all the estate ,rights, tithe ...... use, trust, property, possession, gain and demand whatsoever both at law and in equity of him the said James Pavitt of in to or out of the said messuage or tenement, lands, hereditaments and premises and every and any part or parcel thereof and all deeds, evidences and writings whatsoever in anyways relating to the said hereditaments and premises or any part thereof now in the custody or power of the said James Pavitt or which he can ... by without suit at law or in equity to have and to hold the said messuage or tenement, lands, hereditaments and premises hereinbefore mentioned and intended to be hereby bargained and sold with their and every of their appurtenances unto the said Joseph Perry and his heirs to the only proper and absolute use and behoof of the said Joseph Perry, his heirs and assigns for ever at the will of the Lord according to the custom of the said manor and subject to the rents, services and customs therefore due and of right accustomed and the said James Pavitt doth hereby for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators covenant and declare with and to the said Joseph Perry, his heirs and assigns that he the said James Pavitt hath not done, committed, permitted or suffered any act, deed or thing whatsoever whereby the said messuage or tenement, lands, hereditaments and premises hereby bargained and sold or intended so to be or any of them or any part thereof are is can or may be charged, impeached, incumbered or affected in tithe, estate or otherwise howsoever In witness whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first before written.
4. An Indenture made the 14th January between James Pavitt of Clavering, Essex, shopkeeper the surviving executor and trustee for sale under the last will and testament (dated 8th August 1827) of Thomas Nottage late of Henham, Essex, auctioneer and appraiser, deceased, of the messuage or tenement and Joseph Perry of Clavering in which he appointed Thomas Living of Wicken Bonhunt, farmer, and James Pavitt together with his son George Nottage joint executors and trustees. The Will has a codicil dated 27th Feb. 1828 revoked the appointment of his son George Nottage and also the devise of his real estate. Thomas Living and James Pavitt sold Thomas Nottage's customary or copyhold messuage or tenement, lands and hereditaments by public auction 'at the sign of the Cock in Henham o the 10th July 1829. However, no person bid for the hereditaments and premises or any part so no sale was made. Thomas Living later died. James Pavitt contracted with Joseph Perry for the absolute sale of the customary or copyhold messuage or tenement etc for £2,000. The sale included two parcels of customary land lying in Platts field , one parcel called 'Johnsons' containing three roods and the other parcel called 'Lorkins' containing half an acre, and also one parcel of customary land called 'Sandpit' piece and lying in a common field called Platts field containing two acres, and one other piece or parcel of arable land also lying in Platts field containing one acre of three acres, and all of that toft or piece of ground whereon a tenement sometime stood with a garden and orchard thereto belonging (but which said tenement has been down a great number of years and the land formerly a garden and orchard laid into the pieces or parcels of pasture); also two parcels of pasture called 'Allewoods' containing about three acres, and two crofts of land containing about three acres also called 'Allewoods', and also one piece or parcel of arable land lying in a common field called Platts field upon Berry Hill there containing by estimation six acres as the same premises are situate and being in the parish of Henham and were formerly in the tenure or occupation of Richard Bush or his undertenants.

2. 10th May 1698 - Abstract of the title of Mrs. Mary Mead to a messuage and ten acres of land, part freehold and part copyhold in Henham in the County of Essex. Made between Thomas Mead the Elder and Thomas Mead the Younger (son and heir apparent of the said Thomas Mead the father) of the first part, Edward George of the second part and Susan George, widow, of the third part. Reciting that a marriage was then intended to be had between the said Thomas Mead the son and Susan George. In consideration of the marriage, both Thomas Meads did grant, bargain, sell, .. release and confirm to the said Edward George and his heirs all those three pieces or parcels of pasture and arable land with the appurts thereunto belonging called or known by the name of 'Coles' containing by estimation seven acres more or less lying and being in a certain endway called 'Crosstreet Green' in the parish of Henham aforesaid by lands belonging to the Rectory of Henham aforesaid and by lands sometime of James Brown and afterwards of Margaret Brown towards the north and by land of the said Thomas Mead toward the south abutting upon the king's highway leading from Henham aforesaid towards Stortford towards the east and upon lands belonging to the Rectory aforesaid towards the west as the said premises were then in the occupation of William Davey or his assigns.

A separate document mentions the land above being held of the Manor of Pledgdons Commons alias the Rectory of Henham and being of three acres and lying in a close called 'Cooles' alias 'Coles' in Henham in the tenure of William Davey. Continues: by indenture between Nathaniel Catlin (by his name and description therein mentioned, and Thomas Mead of Thaxted, butcher (only son and heir of the bodies of the aforesaid Thomas Mead the son and Susan his wife who was son and heir of the said Thomas Mead the Elder of the one part and Thomas Wolfe, gentleman of the other part. The property was one messuage, one malthouse, one kiln, one barn, one stable, one curtilage, one garden, six acres of land and four acres of pasture with the appurtenances in Walden and Henham. 8th Dec 1736 Thomas Mead was admitted (tenant to him and his heirs as the only son and heir of his father) to all that customary close of land called 'Coles' otherwise 'Cowells' by estimation three acres more or less with the appurts situate and being in the parish of Henham in the County of Essex.

4th Oct. 1717 William Stubbins was admitted tenant to him and the heirs of his body on the death and as son and heir of the body of the said Mary Stock, afterwards Mary Stubbing to the said messuage 8. and after such admission at the same Court the said William Stubbing suffered a Recovery of the said premises wherein Joseph Sparrow was defendant, John Rowley, gentleman was tenant, William Stubbing was 1st voucher and afterwards the said William Stubbing was admitted on the Surrender of the Demandant tenant to him and his heirs of the said premises. And at the same Court Robert Hammond was admitted tenant to him and his heirs of said premises on the Surrender of said Stubbing. Same date - bond from said Stubbing to said Hammond for assurance of title.
9. 22nd April 1724 the said Robert Hammond surrendered the premises to James Raymond, gentleman, conditionally for securing £45 and interest.
28th Nov 1743 An acknowledgement of Satisfaction thereon under the hand of said Raymond with an Order to the Steward to enter same.
10. 30th June 1747 Thomas Mead was admitted tenant to him and his heirs on the Surrender of Robert Hamond to the said premises by the following description viz. All that customary messuage or tenement with orchard, yard and the outhouses, buildings and appurtenances to the same belonging situate and being in Henham aforesaid and fronting north and northward on the common highway leading from the sign of the Cock there towards a certain green called Prison Green
And afterwards at the same Court said Thomas Mead surrendered to the use of his Will
11. 20th Nov. 1768 The said Thomas Mead by his Will duly executed and attested, devised all and singular his messuages, lands, tenements and hereditaments whatsoever with their appurtenances situate lying and being in the parish and bounds of Henham aforesaid to Mary his daughter, heirs and assigns forever. The original is in Miss Mead's custody attested by Benjamin Newell, James Dasnell and John Baker.
12. 10th June 1775 The said Mary Mead was admitted tenant to her and her heirs on the death of the said Thomas Mead her father and according to his Will and surrender to the use thereof To said premises.

1. 12th. December in the 7th year of the reign of George the Second in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty-three. A bond between Mr. John Wright, yeoman, of Henham and Mr. Richard Harrison, gentleman, of Harlow dated the 12th December 1733. John is held and fully bound to Richard in the sum of three hundred and twenty pounds which is to be paid to Richard Harrison . The condition is that if John pays Richard one hundred and sixty pounds plus interest at the rate of five pounds for one hundred pounds for one year on or upon the thirteenth day of December which will be in the year of Our Lord One thousand seven hundred and thirty-four according to a proviso or condition contained in a Surrender bearing .. date with these presents made by the said John Wright to the said Richard Harrison of certain copyhold lands, tenements and hereditaments holden of the manor of Henham Hall in the said County of Essex. The said Surrender and these presents being a Security for one and the same sum of money Then this obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force. thirty made and published his last Will and Testament in writing and by the same he gave and devised the premises aforesaid with their appurtenances unto the said John Wright, his heirs and assigns for ever in these words following that is to say IMPRIMIS All those my lands and tenements with their appurtenances called 'Lokers' or otherwise lying and being in Henham aforesaid I give and will and devise unto my son John Wright and to his heirs and assigns for ever Upon Condition nevertheless that he the said John Wright my son, his heirs or assigns do and shall yearly and every year pay or cause to be paid unto my granddaughter Ann Wright, daughter of my late deceased daughter Ann the sum of five pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain by four equal quarterly payments at the four most usual feasts or days in the year , that is to say, the feasts of the Annunciation of the Blessed Lady Mary the Virgin, Saint John the baptist, Saint Michael the Archangel and the Birth of Our Lord Christ commonly called Christmas when the said Ann my Granddaughter her full age of one and twenty years And I do hereby order, direct and appoint that my said son John Wright, his heirs or assigns shall yearly and every year from and after my said Granddaughter Ann Wright's attainment to her said age of one and twenty years pay or cause to be paid unto my said granddaughter Ann Wright the sum of five pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain in manner aforesaid But if the said John Wright my son, his heirs or assigns shall neglect or refuse to pay or cause to be paid unto my said Granddaughter Ann Wright the said yearly rent or sum of five pounds when she the said Ann Wright my granddaughter shall have attained to her said age of one and twenty years by the said respective quarterly payments as aforesaid as hereinbefore limited and appointed for payment thereof for and until such time as She the said Ann Wright my granddaughter shall be fully paid and satisfied, her said legacy of forty pounds hereinbefore given and bequeathed to her That then my Mind and Will is And I do hereby give full power and authority unto the said Ann Wright my Granddaughter or her assigns to enter into and upon my aforesaid lands and lands and tenements called 'Lokers' or otherwise or any part or parcel thereof and the same to have, hold and enjoy and the rents, issues and profits thereof to have, receive and take until she the said Ann Wright my Granddaughter shall be fully paid and satisfied, her said legacy of forty pounds or any part thereof in manner as aforesaid and all .. thereof and every part thereof together with all costs and charges to be expended in the same or otherwise for the recovery thereof shall be fully paid and satisfied as in and by the said Will .. thereto being had more fully and at large it doth and may appear Whereupon at this Court .. the said John Wright the son in his own proper person and humbly prayed of the lord to be admitted Tenant to the premises aforesaid with their appurtenances To whom the Lord by his said Steward granted seizin thereof by the Rod To have and to hold the premises aforesaid with their appurtenances unto the said John Wright the son, his heirs and assigns for ever of the Lord by the Rod at the Will of the Lord according to the custom of the said manor under the condition the said Will contained by the rents and services therefore .. due and of Right accustomed and gave to the Lord for a .. as appears and so forth And was admitted Tenant and did fealty and so forth. 'Sir, The following statement contains the quantity of land allotted to you, and describes the fences you are required to make, which are to be planted with white-thorn layer, not less than four feet from the stumps, with ditches of a sufficient depth for the under drainage of the adjacent lands, and a proper culvert at each gateway' . description is of being in Platts Common, of 3 acres and 20 perches, that the fencing is against the road and a hand-written note saying 'it '' adjacent land of ..Bush' and a seperate note of 'T. N. Abdy Esqu.'

Memorandum of Agreement made and entered into this thirteenth day of Feb in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine between Thomas Neville Abdy of Albyns in the County of Essex Esquire, nephew and heir at law of The Reverend Charles Boyd Abdy late of Coopersale in the County of Essex, Clerk, for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators of the one part and Radcliff Pearle Todd of Sturmer in the said County of Essex Esquire for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators of the other part as follows that is to say. The said Thomas Neville Abdy agrees to sell and the said Radcliff Pearle Todd agrees to purchase at or for the price or sum of One hundred and thirty pounds All that piece or parcel of freehold arable land lying in Platt Field in the parish of Henham in the County of Essex containing by estimation three acres be the same more or less and now in the occupation of James Bush as tenant from year to year at the rent of four pounds ten shillings subject to the land tax of five shillings Together with all rights, members and appurtenances thereto belonging. The said sum of one hundred and thirty pounds to be paid to the said Thomas Neville Abdy, his executors or administrators free and clear.
8. Auction. This Lot is copyhold of the Manor of Henham Hall, and subject to a customary fine on death or alienation, and an annual quit rent of 1s. 7d. Lot 6, a piece or parcel of excellent freehold arable land, lying in Platt Field, containing 3 acres, more or less, now in hand. Land tax 5s 0d per annum.
9. Sale catalogue. Lot 6. Freehold and Copyhold property at Henham, Essex to be sold by auction by Mr. Summers on Tuesday, the 9th. of August 1836 at 3 o'clock in six lots. Handwritten endorsement on catalogue - ' I hereby acknowledge that William Gee esquire has been this day declared purchaser of Lot 6 of the Estates mentioned in this particular at the sum of one hundred and seventeen pounds and that he has paid into .. hands twenty - three pounds eight shillings as a deposit and in part payment of the said purchase money. As witness my hand this 9th day of August 1836.

This Indenture made the twenty second day of June in the ninth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty-five Between Robert Hammond of Henham on the Mount in the County of Essex, yeoman, of the one part and William Jarvis of the same place, yeoman, of the other part Witnesseth that the said Robert Hammond for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings of good and lawful money of Great Britain to him in hand paid by the said William Jarvis at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted, bargained, sold, devised and to farm letten and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell, devise and to farm let unto the said William Jarvis All those his three acres of arable land more or less with their appurtenances lying and being in Henham on the Mount aforesaid in a certain Common field there called Platt field between the lands late of William Wright the Younger and now of Richard Bush on the north side and the lands late of William Moore and now of Joseph Coffley esquire on the south side one head thereof doth abut upon the lands late of the said William Moore and now of the said Joseph Coffley towards the east and the other head thereof doth abut upon the lands late of ... Mitchell and now of ... Moore, gentleman, towards the west as the said three acres of land now are in the tenure or occupation of the said Robert Hammond or his assigns And the Reversion and Reversions, Remainder and Remainders thereof and of every part thereof To have and to hold the said three acres of land and all other the premises hereinbefore mentioned and intended to be hereby granted, bargained, sold, devised to farm letten and every part and parcel thereof with the appurtenances unto the said William Jarvis, his Executors, Administrators and Assigns from the day next before the day of the date of these presents for and during and until the full end and term of one whole year from thence next ensuing and fully to be complete and ended Yielding and paying therefore unto the said Robert Hammond, his heirs or assigns one peppercorn at the expiration of the said term if the same be lawfully demanded To the intent that by force and virtue of thereby be these presents and of the Statute for transferring uses into possession he the said William Jarvis may be in the actual possession of the said above devised premises with the appurtenances and be enabled to accept and take a grant and release of the Reversion and Inheritance thereof unto him the said William Jarvis and his heirs forever In Witness whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written. Common containing together by estimation thirty-eight acres and three roods be they more or less and all and singular other the freehold lands and premises of them the said Anne Savile and Edward Savile situate, lying and being in the said parish of Henham and then or then late were in the tenure or occupation of him the said William Wright, his assigns or assignees to hold the said messuage, lands, tenements, hereditaments and all and singular other the premises thereby granted and released with their and every of their appurtenances unto the said William Fry, his executors, administrators and assigns from the day nextbefore the date of the said Indenture for and during the term of one thousand years thence next ensuing and fully to be complete and ended without impeachment of or for any manner of waste with a provision or condition to be void upon payment of the said sum of two hundred pounds and interest for the same as therein is mentioned And whereas in and by an endorsement on the back of the said Deed bearing date on or about the fourteenth day of August One thousand seven hundred and six in consideration of one hundred and fifty pounds more paid by the said William Fry to the said Anne Savile and Edward Savile upon the equity of redemption of the said premises the said Anne Savile and Edward Savile did grant and agree with him and his assigns that wither they nor any of their executors or assigns would or might redeem the premises without paying him or his executors the further sum of one hundred and fifty pounds and interest at six pounds per cent ... and did covenant to pay the same on the sixteenth day of November then next And Whereas the said William Fry is since dead but some time before his death made his last will and testament in writing and his daughters Susannah Bowier and Frances Fry spinster executrix who have duly proved his will and by another endorsement on the back of the above written deed bearing date the day before the date hereof the said Susannah Bowier and Frances Fry in consideration of three hundred and fifty pounds to them mentioned to be paid by me the said William Pick did bargain, sell, assign, transfer and setover unto me the said William Pick, my executors, administrators and assigns as well all the said messuage, lands, tenements, hereditaments and all and singular other the premises in the beforesaid written indenture and endorsement mentioned to be assigned to the said William Fry as also all monies thereon due amounting to three hundred and fifty pounds and all the estate, right, title, interest, use, trust, property, claim and demand whatsoever of them the said Susannah Bowier, widow and Frances Fry and either of them whether in law or equity of into or out of the same premises .. or any part thereof by virtue of the said indenture and endorsement or otherwise howsoever To hold the said messuage, lands, tenements, hereditaments and all and singular other the premises within mentioned with their and every of their appurtenances unto me the said William Pick, my executors, administrators and assigns to mine and their own use for and during the residue and remainder of the tenure of one thousand years in the above in part ... mentioned then to come and unexpired in as full, large, ample and beneficial manner to all intents and purposes as the said Susannah Bowier and Frances Fry, their executors or assigns could or might have enjoyed the same as in and by the said indenture, endorsement and will referred to them being, had, may, more fully and at large appears Now I the said William Pick do hereby acknowledge and declare that my name is only used for and for the only benefit of the said Frances Fry, her executors and assigns the three hundred and fifty pounds mentioned to be paid by me being the proper money of her the said Frances Fry and not mine And I the said William Pick do hereby for myself, my heirs, executors, and administrators covenant and agree to and with the said Frances Fry, her executors, administrators and assigns that I the said William Pick , my executors and assigns shall and will at any time hereafter at the request, costs and charges of the said Frances Fry, her executors, administrators or assigns or to such person or persons as the said Frances Fry, her executors, administrators or assigns shall nominate and appoint free from all incumbrances to be had, made, committed or suffered by me the said William Pick, my executors or administrators In Witness whereof I the said William Pick have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventeenth day of May in the seventh year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Anne by the grace of God Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the faith Anno Dom 1708. Ann Savill late of Henham and now of Hintson in the County of Cambridge, widow sendeth greetings whereas George Guyver of Henham aforesaid, gentleman, did some years since purchase to him and his heirs of Thomas Savill of Henham aforesaid, gentleman, and Eleanor his wife and of Charles Savill of Hintson and Lettica his wife two of the sons of the said Ann Savill All that messuage or tenement with the appurtenances in Henham aforesaid sometime called or known by the name of 'Kirpes' also 'Thorpes' or by whatsoever name or names the same was or is known or called And also five Crofts or Closes of freehold meadow and pasture ground thereto belonging or therewith used called or known by the several names of 'New Croft', 'Richard Turner's Mead', 'Broad Croft' and 'Brockledon Common' and eleven pieces or parcels of land in a Common field in Henham aforesaid called or known by the name of Ashfield Common eleven pieces or parcels of land in Ashfield Common and also one piece or parcel of land in Fern (?) The Manor of Henham Hall to wit The General Court Baron and Customary Court of Jonathan Feake Esquire, Thomas Glyn Esquire and Amelia Penelope Hollingbury, widow, Lords and Lady of the said Manor there holden in and for the same Manor on Monday the thirtieth day of April in the fiftieth year of the Reign of Our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the faith and in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ten before John Freeman, gentleman, Steward there. At this Court it is also witnessed by the said Steward and presented by the said Homage on their Oaths that since the last Court and before this Court (to wit) on the twenty-sixth day of August in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and nine James Ginn Searle of Saffron Walden in the County of Essex, draper, a customary tenant of the said Manor Did out of Court surrender by the Rod into the hands of the Lords and Lady of the said Manor by the Hands and acceptance of William Dennis on and John Barker two other Customary tenants of the said manor according to the custom thereof All those two parcels of customary land lying in Platts field one parcel thereof called 'John sons' containing by estimation three roods and one other parcel thereof called 'Larkins' containing by estimation half an acre. And also one messuage or tenement with the yard, garden and orchard as the same premises are situate and being in the parish of Henham aforesaid and were then in the tenure of Thomas Nottage, his under tenants or assigns and holden of the said Manor by three separate Copies of Court Roll and all other the Customary Lands and Tenements whatsoever of him the said James Gin Sear le holden of the said Manor by Copy of Court Roll and other services and which the said James Gin Sear le took to him and his heirs at a Court holden in and for the said Manor the fourteenth day of December one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two on the Surrender of Samuel Shore and Francis Edmunds esquires and all ways, rights, Commons, Rights of Common Members privileges and appurtenances whatsoever to the same premises belonging or in anyway appertaining and the Reversion and Reversions, Remainder and Remainders thereof and all the estate, right, title, interest, inheritance, possession, property, claim, and demand whatsoever both at law and in equity of him the said James Gin Sear le of, in, and to the same Premises To the uses of such person or persons and for such estate and estates, uses, intents and purposes as the said Thomas Nottage should at any time or times before the then next General Court Baron to be holden in and for the said Manor by and Deed or Deeds Instrument or Instruments in writing to be sealed and delivered by him in the presence of and attested by two or more credible witnesses direct limit or appoint and in default of or until such direction, limitation or appointment or in case any such shall be made then subject thereto and when and as the Estate or Estates, Interest or Interests thereby directed, limited or appointed should end or determine and in the mean time subject thereto and as to such part and parts of the same premises and all such Estate and Interest therein of which no such direction, limitation or appointment should be effectively made as aforesaid To the only proper use and behoof of the said Thomas Nottage and of his heirs and assigns absolutely and for ever according to the customs of the said Manor And Thereupon at this Court in his proper person comes the said Thomas Nottage and humbly prays of the Lords and lady of the said Manor to be admitted tenant to the said premises according to the form and effect of the said recited Surrender To Whom the Lords and Lady of the said Manor by their said Steward Did grant and deliver seizin thereof by the Rod To have and to hold the said customary lands, messuage and premises with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas Nottage, his heirs and assigns according to the form and effect and under and subject to the Trusts of the said recited Surrender of the Lords and lady of the said Manor by the Rod and at the Will of the Lords and lady by Copies of Court Roll according to the custom of the said manor by the yearly rents, suits, services and other Customs therefore due and of right accustomed and he gives to the Lords and lady for fines on such his admission as appear in the margin and so is thereof admitted Tenant on form aforesaid but his fealty is respited and so forth. Indenture tripartite made the 25th October 1731 and in the fifth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second King between George Glover the Elder of Henham on the Mount in the county of Essex, gentleman and Mary his wife, George Jude of Blackmore in the county of Essex, grocer and Susannah his wife of the first part. John Michell of the parish of St Margaret Moses, London, gentleman, Edward Camp of Great Canfield in the said county of Essex, miller of the second part and George Guyver the Younger late of Henham aforesaid gentleman (only son and heir of the said Gorge Guyver the Elder and Elizabeth his wife of the third part. Witnesseth that for diverse good causes and considerations the parties hereunto officially moving this hereby covenanted, concluded and agreed by and between all and every of the said parties to these presents for themselves and their heirs and the said George Guyver the Elder and George Judd for themselves and their heirs do covenant, promise and agree to and with the said John Michell and Edward Camp, their heirs, executors and administrators that they the said George Guyver the Elder and Mary his wife, George Judd and Susannah his wife shall and will at the costs and charges of the said George Guyver the Elder and Edward Camp or some of them before the end of the present Michaelmas Term or some other subsequent term acknowledge and levy in His Majesty's Court of Common Pleas at Westminster one fine sur cognizance de droit com ceo (in old practice that part of a fine in which the defendant acknowledged that the land in question was the right of the complainant. 11. Indenture. Tripartite made 20th June 1717 between Anne Osbourne of Albury in the County of Hertford, widow, of the first part, William Canning of Elsenham in the county of Essex, gentleman, of the second part and William Wright of Henham on the Mount, Essex, yeoman and William Wright the Younger, son of the said William Wright of the third part. Whereas the said William Wright the Elder hath upon the day of the date hereof borrowed and received of and from the said William Canning the sum of three hundred and ten pounds and for serving the repayment thereof with interest for the same .. the said William Wright the Elder hath by surrender bearing even date with these presents duly surrendered out of his hands into the hands of the lord of the manor of Henham Hall by the Rod according to the custom of the said manor All that customary or copyhold barns with the orchard and those parcels of land thereto belonging containing by estimation twelve acres more or less And also all that customary messuage or tenement called Crouchmans with the lands thereto adjoining situate and being in the parish of Henham aforesaid and abutting upon the high way there leading from Debden towards Bishop Stortford on the north part and upon a chaseway there on the west part one head thereof abutteth upon certain lands belonging to Henham Hall towards the south and one other parcel thereof abutteth upon the lands now or late of John Reeve towards the east And also all those three acres of land called Cades land and two acres of land lying in Brockleden Field and also one other piece of land lying in Brockleden Field aforesaid containing half an acre And also one other piece of land lying in the said field called Nash Field containing half an acre and all other the the messuage, lands, tenements and hereditaments whatsoever of the said William Wright the Elder holden of the said manor of Henham Hall And whereas the said William Wright the Elder hath also upon the day of this date of these presents borrowed and received of and from the said William Canning the further sums of one hundred and five pounds and for securing the repayment thereof with interest for the same he the said William Wright the Elder hath by surrender bearing even date with these presents duly surrendered out of his hands into the hands of the lord of the manor of Amberden Hall by the Rod according to the custom of the said manor. Indenture Tripartite between George Guyver the Elder of Henham on the Mount, gentleman, and Mary his wife and George Guyver the Younger of Henham aforesaid, gentleman (only son and heir of the said George Guyver the Elder and Mary his wife, of the first part, John Michell of the parish of Saint Margaret Moses, London, gentleman and Henry Staines of Great Dunmow in the county of Essex, gentleman, of the second part and Elizabeth Canning of Widdington in the county of Essex, spinster, of the third part. Concerns Upper Croft and Lower Croft together two and a half acres, East Field 5 roods, Common Barn 3 roods, Stones Acre one acre, Perry Field 25 acres, Davyes Park 6 acres and Woods Mead 7 acres, all in Henham.
18. 1731 10th Sept. George Guyver the Younger receives one thousand two hundred pounds being the consideration sum to be paid to him as her marriage portion by his intended wife Elizabeth Canning

To all those parcels of land now or late called 'Coles' (5 acres and 2 roods).
Mentions that on the 25th Oct 1715 at a court then held, reciting that at a court held on the 7th Oct 1696 it was presented that John Guyver on the 5th April 1694 surrendered by two tenants the said two pieces or parcels of land in Copperton Field otherwise Hyde and Platt Field commons ... At this court came said Jane Savell widow of said Lambert Savell and was admitted to said premises.

One of the documents is a bond on conditional surrender of John Rice to Robert Ellis of Harlow dated 3rd May 1751. John Rice, together with William Jarvis of Henham on the Mount, yeoman, re a customary messuage and lands with their appurtenances. Mentions George Guyver. Document is dated 22nd April 1768.
