D/K 8  St THERESA, STANSTED MOUNTFITCHET. The church and parish of St. Theresa of Lisieux, Stansted Mountfitchet was founded in 1958, when a site at Millside and Mill House were purchased and the latter converted into a house-church. By the end of the 20th century the premises had become inadequate for the growing parish community and a new church was needed. In 2002 the former parishes of St. Theresa, Stansted Mountfitchet and St. Anthony, HENHAM were merged and the sites of the two churches sold to provide funds for a new parish church to serve the joint community. This church, also dedicated to St. Theresa, was built on a site in High Lane, Stansted Mountfitchet. It was completed late in 2002 and consecrated in 2003. The deeds in this collection apparently relate to the site at Millside and the Mill House which became the first church of St. Theresa in 1958

1899-1987 Congregational (later United Reformed) Church records DUPLICATE REGISTERS OF MARRIAGES.

All the registers postdate the Marriage Act 1898 (61 & 62 Vic. c.58). As from 1 April 1899, this amended the Marriage Act 1836 to permit marriages to be solemnized in registered places of worship (’registered buildings’) without the presence of a registrar. Previously his presence had been required for all marriages other than those of Anglicans, Quakers and Jews, with the result that many nonconformist churches were not registered for the solemnization of marriages (as opposed to public worship) until after 1898. For an example of an earlier registration, in 1849, see HENHAM United Reformed Church (D/NC 36/2). Churches which were registered for the solemnization of marriages before 1898 might keep their own unofficial registers of marriages attended by the registrar (and therefore appearing officially in his register).

D/NC 83/11/1  1949 - 1973 Register of marriages (’No. 1′) of the Independent Chapel (from [5 October 1972] the United Reformed Church), HENHAM. Closed by direction of the Registrar General, 17 October 1978, ‘in consequence of the Church having ceased to be used as a place of worship by the congregation on whose behalf it was certified ‘

D/NC 83/11/1  United Reformed Church, HENHAM

See D/NC 36 for other records of this church. These include a certificate of the registration of the building for the solemnization of marriages on 3 November 1849 (D/NC 36/2). However, with the exception of the marriages of 1949-1973 recorded in D/NC 83/11/1 (and a single marriage of 1927 noted in D/NC 36/3) the church seems to have kept no record of marriages solemnized there. Any which took place before 1949 will presumably be found in the registrar’s register.

D/RSt  STANSTED RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL - Stansted RDC was formed in 1894 and comprised the following parishes: Berden, Birchanger, Elsenham,  Farnham, Great Hallingbury, Little Hallingbury, HENHAM, Manuden, Stansted Mountfitchet, Ugley

In 1934 Stansted Rural District Council ceased to exist; Great Hallingbury and Little Hallingbury were transferred to Dunmow Rural District Council and the other eight parishes were transferred to Saffron Walden Rural District Council.

D/RSt 2/1/1-5, D/RSt 2/2/1, D/RSt 2/3/1, D/RSt 2/4/1 catalogued by RC March 2006. The records of Stansted Rural District Council were deposited at the same time as the records of the Stansted Water Company

(D/F 285) and the writing in D/F 285/1/1 and D/RSt 2/2/1 appears to be by the same person. However, as Stansted RDC was abolished in 1934 (becoming instead part of Saffron Walden RDC) it is not clear what the connection is between the two.

D/Y 1/1/175/1 23 August 1725 HOLMAN MANUSCRIPTS - Correspondence obtaining information for Holman’s History of Essex. Letter to William Holman from James Smith Sending as much answer as he can but he is not very curious about these matters. Plegden Hall and manor was in the Crew family which became extinct in with the death of Lord Crew, Bishop of Durham. He left the estate to Mr Cartwright of Northamptonshire who is the present possessor of it. The main estate in the town here was purchased by Dr. Wright father of Sir Henry Wright between 1640 and 1660. Lady Wright, widow of Sir Henry held it as her jointure, and annexed an estate worth £34 per annum to the vicarage. Lady Wright’s daughter inherited the estate and sold it to Sir John Blunt from whom it went and remains in the Trustees of the South Sea Company. 4 or 5 houses a little distance from HENHAM called Little HENHAM and the manor there is called Plegden Canons, but he does not know why. There are no almshouses or charitable donations except a small amount which they have in common with 13 other parishes. Mr Dale knows about this. He knows of no manor in Ugley called Brends Hall.
