We are grateful to the present owners for permission to reproduce the following documents, including maps, giving the history of a plot of land at Wood End Green. This includes the property currently named 'Prompt Corner' and also some neighbouring plots. Below is a table of some five dozen pages. These are followed by text transcripts which enable the viewer to more easily and accurately wordsearch the contents.
Prompt Corner 01 - Dated 24th June 1884. An Indenture of this date made between Salisbury Baxendale (thereinafter called the Mortgager) of the one part and Hugh Fort (thereinafter called the Mortgagee of the other part). Witnessed that in consideration of the sum of £10,000 paid to be Mortgager by Mortgagee (receipt ..) The Mortgager covenanted with the Mortgagee to pay to him on 24th June 1889 the sum of £10,000 with interest thereon in the meantime at the rate of 3 3/4 per cent per annum by equal half yearly payments on 24th June and 24th day of December and interest after default. And it is also witnessed that for the same consideration The Mortgager as Beneficial Owner thereby conveyed to the Mortgagee All those messuages, lands and hereditaments situate at Henham in the County of Essex comprised in the Schedule thereunder written as the same were delineated on the plan annexed thereto and thereon coloured pink (except such part as was of copyhold tenure). To hold to and to the use of the Mortgagee in fee simple subject to the Proviso for redemption therein following. Proviso for Redemption - And it was further witnessed that for the consideration aforesaid the Mortgager could to legally and effectually surrender to the use of the Mortgagee such of the said messuages, lands and hereditaments delineated on the said plan and thereon coloured Pink as might be of copyhold tenure and until such surrender to stand seized thereof Upon trust for the Mortgagee, his heirs and assigns subject nevertheless to the like proviso for redemption.

Prompt Corner 08 - March 1899. Abstract of Deed of Reconveyance by Hugh Fort Esquire on payment off of mortgage for £10,000. By Indenture of this date made between Hugh Fort of 24, Lowndes Square in the county of Middlesex but then residing at Singapore in the Colony of the Straits Settlement, esquire, of the one part and Salisbury Baxendale of Bonningtons, Ware in the county of Hertford esquire of the other part. Supplemental to an Indenture (thereinafter called the Principal Indenture) dated the 24th day of June 1884 made between the said Salisbury Baxendale of the one part and the said Hugh Fort of the other part being a mortgage for securing payment to the said Hugh Fort of the sum of £10,000 with interest thereon... And reciting that the said Salisbury Baxendale recently sold the hereditaments comprised in the Principal Indenture known as the Cock Inn described in the Schedule to the Principal Indenture as containing 3.1.31 in the occupation of Messrs. Hawkes & Co. and the said Hugh Fort concurred in such sale and joined in conveying the said hereditaments to the purchaser thereof.

Prompt Corner 10 - By Indenture of the date between Henry Brook of Hatfield (?) in the county of Essex, gentleman, of the first part Joseph Thomas Collin and James Collin both of Saffron Walden both of the second part and Salisbury Baxendale of Bonnington, Ware in the county of Hertford of the third part. Reciting by an indenture dated the 13th July 1878 and expressed to be made between the said Henry Brook of the one part and the said J. T. Collin and J. Collin of the other part in consideration of the sum of £151 paid by the said J.T. Collin and J. Collin to said H. Brook the freehold premises thereby .. were conveyed by the said H. Brook unto the use of the said J.T. Collin and J. Collin, their heirs and assigns subject to a proviso for the redemption thereof ....
Prompt Corner 11 - in continuation of Prompt Corner 10 above - All that messuage or tenement now divided into two tenements formerly called or known by the name of 'The Boggs' together with all outhouses, edifices, buildings thereunto belonging situated in Henham in the county of Essex at or near a certain Green there called Wood End Green between the messuage and lands formerly of Richard Osbourne towards the north and the lands formerly of John Newland towards the south and also all that piece or parcel of land formerly an orchard containing by estimation 22 poles more or less situate in Henham aforesaid one head thereof lying .. the aforesaid Green west and the other head adjoining the lands formerly of Lady Wright east lying and the grounds formerly of John Mead (?) with land formerly of Thomas Mead south all which .....

Prompt Corner 14 - Dated 13th April 1927. Manuscript note by solicitor that the original was produced to and examined by Bishops Stortford solicitor on the 4th Feb. 1960. Supplemental Abstract of Title of Martin Baynes to freehold property situate at Wood End Green, Henham in the County of Essex, labourer (thereinafter called the Borrower, a member of The Herts & Essex Permanent Building Society of the one part and The Herts & Essex Permanent Building Society ...The Schedule. All that messuage or tenement now in two tenements formerly called or known by the name of 'The Boggs' together with the outhouses, buildings and garden ground thereto belonging and containing in the whole two roods and thirty-three poles more or less as the said hereditaments are situate at Henham aforesaid on the East side of Wood End Green and are bounded on or towards the West by Wood End Green aforesaid on or towards the North by hereditaments formerly of Thomas Wright and now of Miss Elliott on or towards the East by land formerly of Sir Walter Gilbey, baronet, and now of Mrs. Elliott and on or towards the South by the footpath leading from the said Green to the allotment gardens.
Prompt Corner 15 - 20th May 1949. By receipt endorsed ... that The Herts & Essex Permanent Building Society had that day received the money secured by the therein within written mortgage including all interest and costs the payment having been made by Martin Baynes.

Prompt Corner 17 - By a Conveyance dated the 17th day of October 1959 and made between the within named Martin Baynes of the one part and Charles Salmon of the other part a further portion of the land delineated and coloured blue on the within plan and situate immediately adjoining the north side of the plot described in and conveyed by the Conveyance of 29th April 1959 above mentioned with a frontage of 51 feet to Wood End Green and a depth at the rear of 14 feet was conveyed to the said Charles Salmon and his right to production and delivery of copies of this deed was acknowledged.
Prompt Corner 18 - 12th April 1927. Abstract of Title of Mr. Martin Baynes to freehold dwelling houses and premises at Wood End Green, Henham in the County of Essex. By a Conveyance of this date made between Alfred Ernest Wright of Museum Street, Saffron Walden in the County of Essex, Friendly Society Secretary, and Frank Charles Wright of Henham in the aforesaid County of Essex, shoemaker, who at the date of his death was seised of the hereditaments thereinafter .. in unincumbered fee simple in possession died on 11th Nov 1915 have by his Will dated 21st Feb. 1901 ... who duly proved the same on the 14th Feb. 1916 in the .. probate registry. ...Thomas Wright agreed to sell the aforesaid hereditaments to the purchaser at the price of £250. ... All that messuage or tenement now in two tenements formerly called or known by the name of The Boggs together with the outhouses, buildings and garden ground thereto belonging and containing in the whole 2 roods and 33 poles more or less as the ... hereditaments are situated at Henham aforesaid on the east side of Wood End Green there and bounded on or towards the west by Wood End Green aforesaid on or towards the north by hereditaments formerly of the said Thomas Wright and then of Miss Elliott on or towards the east by land formerly of Sir Walter Gilbey, baronet, and then of Miss Elliott and on or towards the south by the footpath leading from the aforesaid Green to the allotment gardens as the aforesaid hereditaments were then in the occupation of Charles Blackwell and William Sage and were delineated on the plan drawn on a conveyance dated 8th March 1899 and made between Salisbury Baxendale of the one part and the aforesaid Thomas Wright of the other part. To hold the same unto the purchaser in fee simple. 18th Feb. 1955. Memorandum by a conveyance of this date made between the within named Martin Baynes of the one part and John Harold West of the other part a strip of land 12 feet in width from the north western boundary of the land comprised therein and co-extensive therewith in depth from east to west was conveyed to the aforesaid John Harold West and his right to production and delivery of copies of this deed was acknowledged.
Prompt Corner 19 - 29th April 1959. Memorandum by a conveyance of this date made between the within named Martin Baynes of the one part and Charles Salmon of the other part the southern portion of the land delineated and coloured blue on the within plan with a frontage of 52 feet to Wood End Green and a depth at the rear of 52 feet was conveyed to the said Charles Salmon and his right to production and delivery of copies of this deed was acknowledged.

Prompt Corner 21 - 29th Sept. 1923. Abstract of The Title of C. Salmon, esquire to freehold land situate at Henham in the County of Essex. By Indre of this document made between Bertie Wisbey of Pledgedon Hall, Henham in the County of Essex, farmer (thereafter called the vendor) of the one part and Annie Atkinson the wife of Alban Atkinson of The School House aforesaid Schoolmaster (thereafter called 'the purchaser') of the other part. ... It is witnessed that in consideration of the sum of £90 paid etc, the vendor as B.O. thereby conveyed unto the purchaser First all that freehold plot of meadow land situated at Woodend Green in the County of Henham and bounded on the north west by Woodend Green aforesaid on the south east by the Thaxted Light Railway on the north east by a private road the property of the vendor and on the south west by or land of the vendor which said freehold plot of land was more partly delineated on the plan drawn thereon and was thereon coloured pink which plan was taken merely as assisting and explaining the description thereinbefore mentioned and not in any way controlling, enlarging or restricting the same in the event of any variance between the said plan and the said description. Secondly all that freehold plot of garden ground bounded on the south west by the private road thereinbefore mentioned on the south east by the said Thaxted Light Railway and on the north east by property then or late belonging to the Trustees of Sir Walter Gilbey deed All which said freehold plot of garden ground was more particularly delineated on the plan drawn thereon and was thereon coloured blue which said plan was taken merely as assisting and explaining the description thereinbefore described and not in any way controlling, enlarging or restricting the same in the event of any variance between the said plan and the said description together with a right of way for the purchaser, her servants, agents and workmen with or without horses at all time during the night and day
Prompt Corner 22 - 22nd April 1948 On this date the said Edith Willett otherwise Edith Smith died at Saffron Walden without having revoked her said Will. 3rd May 1948 said Will was proved by the aforesaid H.R. Shoebridge and P. Greenhill the executors therein named in the Principal Probate Registry. By assent dated 16th Oct. 1948 the aforesaid Harry Ronald Shoebridge and Percy Greenhill assented to the vestg. in themselves of property known as The Bungalow, Henham in the County of Essex. 16th Oct. 1948 - By assent of this date Harry Ronald Shoebridge of Patmore End, Ugley in the County of Essex, agricultural worker and Percy Greenhill of The Bungalow, Henham Halt, Henham in the said County, agricultural worker (thereinafter called 'the executors') ... all that freehold bungalow near Henham halt... described in conveyance dated 22nd March 1924 and made between A. Atkinson of the one part and aforesaid W. Smith of the other part for an estate in fee simple upon trust to sell the same with power to postpone the sale thereof and to hold the net proceeds of sale and the net income till sale In trust for the executors as tenants in common in equal share. 29th June 1949 - H.R. Shoebridge thereinafter 'the vendor' and P. Greenhill 'the purchaser', the vendor agreeing to sell all his interest in the property at the price of £625. The Schedule includes: 28th Dec. 1933, the probate of the Will of Walter Smith otherwise Walter Willett otherwise Charles Willett; 31st May 1948: probate of the Will of Edith Smith otherwise Edith Willett.
Prompt Corner 23 - By conveyance of this .. made between Percy Greenhill of 30, Rectory Lane, Farnham, Essex thereinafter called 'the vendor' of the 1st part, Frederick James Kent of 39, South Street, Bishops Stortford thereinafter called ' the purchaser' of the 2nd part and Charles Salmon of Henleys, Henham, farmer thereinafter called 'the sub-purchaser' of the 3rd part. The vendor agreed a sale for £1200 to 'the purchaser' and 'the purchaser' agreed to resell the aforesaid property to 'the sub-purchaser' at a price of £1350. Prompt Corner 26 - 14th Oct. 1864. By Indenture of this date made between Henry Wyld Jackson of Haverhill, Suffolk, gentleman and Mary Jackson his wife of the first part, Radcliffe Pearl Todd of Sturmer in the county of Essex, esquire of the second part, Joseph Baxendale of Woodside, Whetstone in the county of Middlesex, esquire of the third part and John Dobede tailer of Bishops Stortford, gentleman of the fourth part. Reciting that by an Indenture dated 23rd Feb. 1833 and made between the said R.P. Todd and Elizabeth Todd his wife of the 1st part, the said Mary Jackson then Mary Todd, spinster, of the 2nd part the said H.W. Jackson of the 3rd. part and William Canning and John Canning of the 4th part and duly acknowledged by the said Eliza Todd (possibly nee Ward - RG) in such manner as by law is required for enabling named women to dispose of their interests in land ... except the subsisting tenancies of George Bush and John George Robinson .. .That all such part or parts as was or are of freehold tenure of and in All that messuage, cottage or tenement with the barn, outbuildings and appurtenances thereto belonging and all those (continued at 28 below)

Prompt Corner 29 - (in continuation of above at 26) - several closes, pieces or parcels of land aforesaid held and occupied therewith situate at Henham in the County of Essex as the same were then late in the tenure or occupation of James Bush and his undertenants and then in the occupation of George Bush or his undertenants. And also all that cottage or tenement with the garden and appurtenances thereto belonging also situate at Henham aforesaid and then in the occupation of William Brand. All which said messuage, cottage or tenements, closes, pieces or parcels of land and hereditaments as the same were then tenanted, called and known were more particularly described and contained the several quantities more or less in the 1st. division of the 1st. Schedule thereunder written and the same were also delineated and described on the map or plan drawn on the last skin of now abstracting presents and were therein coloured blue. ... To the use of the said J. D. Taylor and his heirs during the life of the said Joseph Baxendale in trust for him and his assigns....
Prompt Corner 30 - the considerations aforesaid and in consideration of the further sum of £900 .. .to the said H.W. Jackson paid by the said J. Baxendale the receipt and the said R.P. Todd the request of the said H.W. Jackson and M. Jackson respectively testified and did covenant with the said J. Baxendale, his heirs and assigns to surrender into the hands of the Lord or Lady, Lords or Ladies of the said Manor of Henham Hall, Henham Rectory and Ugley in the said County of Essex whereof the premises were holden and according to the custom thereof respectively.

Prompt Corner 30 - Oct. 1866. The Manor of Henham Hall. All that land late in the occupation of James Bush and were then in the occupation of George Bush. Todd and Mary his wife were admitted tenants at a Court holden for the said Manor on the 28th day of October 1822 under the Will of Mary Canning deceased ... R.P. Prompt Corner 33 - The Manor of Pledgden Canons otherwise The Rectory of Henham in the County of Essex. By surrender of this date Radcliff Pearl Todd of Sturmer in the County of Essex, esquire and Eliza Todd his wife and Henry Wyld Jackson of Haverhill gentleman and Mary Jackson his wife went before John Dobede Taylor gentleman, Steward of the said Manor ... All that customary close of land called 'Coles' otherwise 'Cowells' containing by estimation 3 acres more or less in Henham aforesaid abutting on the freehold lands late of Ann Guyver, the said R.P. Todd was admitted tenant at a Court holden for the said Manor on the 17th day of July 1833 under the Will of the said A. Guyver deceased and of which hereditaments so surrendered as aforesaid the said R.P. Todd was a Trustee for the said H.W. Jackson and Mary his wife... then in the occupation of the said George Bush or of Charles Marshall or either of them ...
Prompt Corner 34 - 26th Nov. 1869. Begins with the same schedule as in PromptCorner 30. By his Will of this date Joseph Baxendale gave and devised unto and equally between his four sons Joseph Hornby Baxendale, Lloyd Baxendale, Richard ... Baxendale and Salisbury Baxendale as tenants-in-common. Probate produced and examined 13th June 1898.

Prompt Corner 42 - in continuation of PC 41 - The Herts & Essex Permanent Building Society that on the 20th May 1949 they received a sum of money (£100 at a monthly rate, including interest, of 16s 3d.) from Martin Baynes, labourer.

Prompt Corner 46 - Conveyance dated 12th April 1927 by Messrs. A.E. & C. Wright to Mr. M. Baynes of a freehold messuage known as 'The Boggs' situate at Wood End Green, Henham in the County of Essex. Memorandum: By a conveyance dated the 18th day of February 1955 and made between the within-named Martin Baynes of the one part and John Harold West of the other part a strip of land 12 feet in width from the north western boundary of the land comprised herein and coextensive therewith in depth from east to west was conveyed to the said John Harold West and his right to production and delivery of copies of this deed was acknowledged.

Memorandum: By a conveyance dated the 19th day of February 1955 and made between the within named Martin Baynes of the one part and Alex Thomas Wright of the other part a plot of land with a frontage of 63 feet to Wood End Green and a measurement at the rear of 73 feet and abutting on the south eastern boundary of the strip mentioned in the above memorandum and coextensive from east to west with the within land was conveyed to the said Alex Thomas Wright and his right to production and delivery of copies of this deed was acknowledged.
Memorandum: By a conveyance dated the 29th day of April 1959 and made between the within named Martin Baynes of the one part and Charles Salmon of the other part the southern portion of the land delineated and coloured blue on the within plan with a frontage of 52 feet to Wood End Green and a depth at the rear of 52 feet was conveyed to the said Charles Salmon and his right to production and delivery of copies of this deed was acknowledged.
Memorandum: By a conveyance dated the 17th day of October 1959 and made between the within named Martin Baynes of the one part and Charles Salmon of the other part a further portion of the land delineated and coloured blue on the within plan and situate immediately adjoining the north side of the plot described in and conveyed by the conveyance of 29th April 1959 above mentioned with a frontage of 51 feet to Wood End Green and a depth at the rear of 14 feet was conveyed to the said Charles Salmon and his right to production and delivery of copies of this deed was acknowledged.
Prompt Corner 48 - Conveyance that includes a plan which includes the delineated plot. This conveyance is made the twelfth day of April One thousand nine hundred and twenty seven Between Alfred Ernest Wright of Museum Street, Saffron Walden in the County of Essex, Friendly Society Secretary and Frank Charles Wright of Henham in the said County of Essex, shoemaker (hereinafter called 'the vendor') of the one part and Martin Baynes of Henham aforesaid (hereinafter called 'the purchaser') of the other part. Whereas Thomas Wright deceased, late of Henham aforesaid, shoemaker, who at the date of his death was seised of the hereditaments hereinafter described in unincumbered fee simple in possession died on the eleventh day of November One thousand nine hundred and one appointed the vendors executors thereof who duly proved the same on the fourteenth day of February One thousand nine hundred and sixteen in the principal probate registry. And whereas the vendors as personal representatives of the said Thomas Wright have agreed to sell the said hereditaments to the purchaser at the price of two hundred and fifty pounds. Now this deed witnesseth as follows.
